Validation of national genomic breeding values (GEBV test)
Validation of genomic Estimated Breeding Values (GEBVs) is crucial for including data in Interbull’s international evaluations. To use genomic information in GMACE, national GEBVs must be validated by Interbull, similar to conventional EBVs, before participating in MACE evaluations.
A GEBV test is required when there are significant changes in genomic or conventional evaluations, or in the reference population, and is valid for only two years. This test validates the national models used to compute GEBVs published by National Genetic Evaluation Centres, ensuring quality assurance for national genomic evaluations.
The GEBV test evaluates:
- The unbiasedness of genomic evaluations through assessment of the consistency of the genetic trend captured by GEBV
- The consistency of variation of GEBVs and EBVs
- The improvement in accuracy from the use of GEBV instead of EBV
The GEBV test service covers six dairy breed groups:
- Brown Swiss
- Guernsey
- Holstein-Friesian (Black & White / Red & White)
- Jersey
- Red Dairy Cattle (including Dairy Shorthorn)
- Simmental (including Montbeliarde)
- Tests and helps to optimise genomic models.
- Provides independent assessment and quality assurance of GEBVs.
- Assists in testing to find best models during model development.
- Provides a “quality stamp” on genomic evaluation services as required by the EU for bulls advertised in the European market.
- Participation in MACE
- The fee for GEBV test is calculated as a percentage of the MACE Production fee and it is equal to 15% of the production fee.
