Some countries, especially those with small populations, may be unable to implement a national genomic evaluation, especially if they are not part of a large international genotype-exchange consortia.
The basic principle of the InterGenomics service is to pool genotypes provided by participating countries to create a unique reference population for international genomic evaluation without the need of sharing genotypes among participants. InterGenomics is an international genotype-based genomic evaluation service provided by Interbull. InterGenomics predicts GEBVs on each specific country-trait combination scale, for the traits evaluated in the Interbull MACE Service. The distributed results from InterGenomics evaluations are SNP-effects, DGVs, GEBVs, and their reliabilities. In addition, information on duplicate genotypes, SNP-conflicts and parentage conflicts are also provided. The target participants for InterGenomics are breeds and populations that are too small to have an effective national genomic evaluation, and that will benefit from a service with a pooled reference population. Interbull carries out international genomic evaluations for two breeds:
- Brown Swiss (InterGenomics-Brown Swiss)
- Holstein (InterGenomics-Holstein).
The InterGenomics-Brown Swiss service has been in place since 2011 with populations from seven countries. After originally pooling genotypes, participating National Genetic Evaluation Centres agreed after a few years to share genotypes among participants.
- InterGenomics enables genomic evaluations for (even) small populations and organisations thanks to international pooling of resources..
- A country participating in InterGenomics is provided with its specific country-trait combination scale for all traits that it also participates with in the Interbull MACE service.
- GEBVs are based on all genotypes contributed from all countries participating in InterGenomics and is therefore expected to provide GEBVs with higher genomic reliability than using only nationally available genotypes. In the case of InterGenomics-Holstein, large countries also contribute genotypes to the InterGenomics reference population.
- Pooling and potential sharing of genotypes are facilitated through the GenoEx-GDE database.
- Participation in MACE.
- A signed service User Agreement with Interbull Centre
- A signed agreement amongst participants regarding the use of genotypes.
- A signed agreement with Contributors regarding the use of genotypes and marketing of young bulls
- GEBV-test completed and passed.
InterGenomics annual service fees are based on:
- A fixed base fee: €2 700.
- A variable service fee, depending on the number of recorded cows of the breed of interest (Brown Swiss or Holstein) in the InterGenomics evaluation in the participating country.
- In InterGenomics-Holstein, the contribution of number of genotypes is also taken into account.
Indicative InterGenomics Annual Service Fee:
- For 50 000 Milk-recorded Brown Swiss or Holstein cows: € 5,400
- 100 000 Milk-recorded Brown Swiss or Holstein cows: € 6,500
